On August 22nd, Sunderland city centre was transformed as live street artists adorned an enormous double-decker bus with vibrant artwork! This pre-painted blue and white bus was creatively enhanced with stunning sea creatures and branding for a new CBD-based soft drink, Mola.
Mola, a refreshing beverage hailing from Indonesia, stands out from typical caffeinated soft drinks. With its unique CBD infusion and subtle flavours, we recognised the need for an innovative advertising approach—enter Illumination Wall Art.
In collaboration with FundAfest, Illumination Wall Art took to the streets to showcase Mola on the iconic double-decker bus. One side features minimal white branding stating, “Relax and try some premium CBD,” inviting everyone to experience this unique drink. My fellow artist, veteran graffiti writer Mr Eyes, and I cracked open some cans of Mola‘s white lemonade and Twisted Lemon flavours, and set to work, transforming the bus with Mola’s branding and an expansive undersea mural.
Inspired by the Mola fish, I painted a large cartoon mola fish on the bus, emphasising the drink’s branding origins and setting the stage for a delightful cast of undersea characters. Amidst swaying seaweed, a hermit crab proudly dual-wielded Mola’s white cans, complemented by Mr Eyes’s signature style on the bus’s side, which creatively featured the Mola name in various blue tones, complete with a cool drop shadow. He also added a whimsical design on the back of the bus, combining the drink can and spray paint into a vibrant character that embodies the spirit of Mola, dancing to the rhythm of the music from its headphones—a nostalgic nod to 80s toys.
The local community in Sunderland was enthusiastic about our artistic efforts, stopping by to chat and sample Mola. We hope this fresh approach to advertising and the unique drink gains traction!
